Located in Blountville, Tennessee, Chateau Selah sits in the Appalachian Mountains and combines sweeping mountain views with European-inspired architecture. The result is something that feels romantic and elegant without losing the beauty of the Tennessee landscape. The property is privately situated on 82 acres and is just five minutes from Interstate 81, which makes it surprisingly convenient for a venue that feels tucked away from everything.
As a photographer, I love venues that give couples more than one pretty backdrop. Chateau Selah is one of those places. You have the mountains, the architecture, the greenery, the pavilion, the ceremony space, and a private field that becomes especially beautiful when the sun starts to set.
And honestly? It doesn't look like every other wedding venue in East Tennessee.
There is something about Chateau Selah that feels almost like a miniature castle in Tennessee. The combination of the mountain views and architecture is what really makes it stand out to me.
Why Chateau Selah in Blountville, Tennessee Stands Out
The property is perched in the mountains of Northeast Tennessee, with panoramic views surrounding the venue. The architecture brings in that European-inspired feel while the landscaping and mountain backdrop keep you firmly planted in East Tennessee. Chateau Selah itself describes the property as a combination of its architecture and the natural beauty surrounding it, and I think that's exactly what makes it work so well.
It's elegant without feeling stuffy.
It's romantic without feeling overly formal.
And then you look out toward the mountains and remember you're still right here in Tennessee.
Getting married at Chateau Selah
Chateau Selah offers a dedicated outdoor ceremony setting with the mountains as your backdrop. The venue's wedding information notes that ceremonies can accommodate up to 225 guests, with options available for larger celebrations as well. Plenty of on-site parking is also available.
From behind the camera, this is one of those ceremony locations where the view really does a lot of the decorating for you.
There are also opportunities for portraits around the ceremony area, and the trees nearby can provide some shade when you need a break from the sun.
One thing I would think about carefully when planning a Chateau Selah ceremony, though, is the time of day.
The ceremony location can get pretty harsh in the middle of the day, especially during the summer. If you're planning a summer wedding and dreaming about soft, romantic images, I would absolutely have a conversation with your photographer about your ceremony timing.
A golden-hour ceremony would be beautiful here.
Of course, your wedding day isn't going to be ruined because the ceremony isn't at sunset. That's not what I'm saying at all. But lighting matters, especially when you've chosen a venue because of its gorgeous views. If you have some flexibility with your timeline, it's worth considering how the sun will interact with the ceremony space.
The Pavilion
After the ceremony, couples can celebrate in Chateau Selah's outdoor pavilion.
The pavilion also has a 225-guest capacity, with options to accommodate more guests, and it's designed to be a blank canvas for your wedding day. It has a dance floor, built-in bar and buffet area, glass sliding doors, ceiling fans and heat, and beautiful post-and-beam architecture.
I love that it gives you the structure of a dedicated reception space without taking away all of the opportunities to make it your own.
The pavilion sits overlooking the mountains, with a lawn and landscaping surrounding it. The venue specifically highlights the Tennessee sunsets from the pavilion, and I can understand why. As the light changes, the entire atmosphere changes with it.
For couples who want a reception that feels elevated but still relaxed, this space gives you a lot to work with.
And because there is a dedicated dance floor, bar, buffet area, and room to accommodate a large guest list, you don't have to sacrifice the fun parts of your wedding just because you also want a gorgeous setting.
Getting Ready
One of the things I really appreciate about Chateau Selah is that both sides of the wedding party have their own spaces to get ready.
The bridal party has access to the luxurious Master Suite, which includes an oversized stone steam shower, clawfoot tub, multiple spaces for hair and makeup, and adequate lighting.
From a photography standpoint, having a dedicated bridal suite makes such a difference.
You have room for the girls to spread out. Hair and makeup artists have space to work. Your details can be photographed without everyone having to step over one another. And, maybe most importantly, you have somewhere comfortable to spend those hours before the ceremony.
The guys have their own space as well. The groomsman quarters, listed by Chateau Selah as the Corporate Den, include a theater and full audiovisual setup.
You can already imagine the difference in energy between the two spaces.
The girls getting ready, hair and makeup happening, dresses hanging up, everyone trying not to cry too early.
The guys in the theater, hanging out and supporting the groom.
Those little moments are part of your wedding story, too, and I love when a venue gives couples a place to actually enjoy them.
Wedding Portraits
This is where I really start getting excited as a photographer.
There are plenty of places around Chateau Selah for portraits, including the ceremony area and the trees when you want some shade. (Click here for a guide on navigating family portraits to save time & energy!) But one of my favorite places to photograph couples is down in the field behind the venue.
It's private, it's beautiful, and it becomes especially gorgeous during golden hour.
If you're getting married at Chateau Selah, please give yourself time for sunset portraits.
I know wedding days can feel like they're moving at approximately 900 miles per hour, and sometimes the idea of stepping away from your reception for portraits feels like one more thing to squeeze into an already-packed timeline.
But this is one of those things I think is worth making room for.
The golden light softens everything. It highlights the property beautifully, gives you those warm tones that I love so much, and gives you and your new husband or wife a few quiet minutes together in the middle of a very busy day.
You don't have to disappear for an hour, either.
Even a short amount of time around sunset can make a huge difference.
And honestly, you deserve those few minutes.
Your wedding day is going to be full of people wanting a piece of your attention. A few quiet minutes together, away from the crowd, can be such a gift.
Planning Your Wedding Timeline
If you're planning a Chateau Selah wedding, I'd start thinking about your timeline with the light in mind rather than trying to fit photography into whatever time is left over.
Your photographer can help you determine when you should plan your ceremony, family portraits, wedding party photos, couple portraits, and sunset portraits based on the season you're getting married.
This is especially important during the summer, when the sun can be strong around the ceremony area in the middle of the day.
If your heart is set on those soft golden images, make sure your timeline gives you a little breathing room around sunset.
And don't forget to actually enjoy your day.
It's very easy to get caught up in making sure every photograph happens exactly when it is supposed to happen. But some of my favorite wedding photographs come from the moments that weren't necessarily on the timeline.
The hug from your mom.
Your dad seeing you for the first time.
Your bridesmaids laughing while you're getting ready.
Your husband squeezing your hand when nobody else is looking.
Those are the photographs you'll care about years from now.
Staying at Chateau Selah
One of the convenient things about Chateau Selah is that there is an option to stay on the property.
The house is 4,500 square feet with three bedrooms and four bathrooms and can sleep up to eight people. The property also includes amenities such as a gourmet kitchen, sunset courtyard, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, a fire pit and grill area, panoramic mountain views, and ample parking. The house is privately situated on the 82-acre property.
For a wedding weekend, having accommodations right at the venue can be a really nice option.
It gives you the opportunity to slow down a little instead of immediately getting in the car and heading somewhere else after the reception.
For guests traveling into the area, there are also plenty of traditional lodging options in and around Blountville and the Tri-Cities. Hotels and motels such as Motel 6, Comfort Inn, and Super 8 are options to consider depending on your budget and where you want to stay.
I'd recommend looking at lodging sooner rather than later if you're bringing a large group of people in from out of town, especially if your wedding falls during one of the busier seasons in Northeast Tennessee.
Things to Do Near The Venue
If your wedding guests are traveling to Blountville, don't feel like the wedding has to be the only thing they do while they're here.
You're right in the middle of Northeast Tennessee, so there are plenty of things to explore throughout the Tri-Cities.
For shopping, The Pinnacle in Bristol is an easy option for guests who want to spend an afternoon browsing stores, grabbing something to eat, or just getting out of the hotel for a bit.
If your guests are more outdoorsy, there are hiking opportunities throughout the region as well as plenty of historical sites to explore.
And if your group is looking for something a little more relaxed, there are breweries, restaurants, and entertainment options throughout the Tri-Cities. Tiebreakers is another fun option for a night out.
Johnson City also tends to have plenty going on, particularly during the summer and fall. So if you're having a wedding weekend rather than simply a wedding day, your guests shouldn't have trouble finding something to do.
That's one of the things I love about getting married in East Tennessee.
You get the mountain scenery and slower pace, but you're still close enough to cities and entertainment that your guests aren't stuck wondering what they're supposed to do between the rehearsal dinner and wedding day.
Is Chateau Selah Worth It?
I'll be honest with you: Chateau Selah is on the pricier side for the East Tennessee area.
But I also think there's something important to consider when you're comparing venues.
You're not just paying for four walls and a place to put tables.
You're paying for the setting, the views, the architecture, the amenities, the getting-ready spaces, the pavilion, the mountain backdrop, the privacy of the property, and the overall experience.
Chateau Selah is privately situated on 82 acres and offers a combination of amenities and scenery that isn't exactly easy to replicate.
And that's why, in my opinion, it's worth the money for the right couple.
If you're looking for the least expensive wedding venue in the area, this probably isn't going to be the one I'd send you toward.
But if you're looking at your wedding as an experience—not just a single day—and you want a venue that feels completely different from the typical barn setting, I think Chateau Selah is worth considering.
Why I Love Chateau Selah as a
Photographer
As a photographer, I'm always looking for places where the surroundings add something to the story instead of simply giving me another pretty background.
Chateau Selah does that.
The mountains are part of the story.
The architecture is part of the story.
The quiet moments in the bridal suite are part of the story.
The guys hanging out in the theater are part of the story.
The ceremony overlooking the mountains is part of the story.
And then, at the end of the day, you can sneak away with your new spouse into that field behind the venue while the sun is going down.
That's the part I love.
It's romantic without trying too hard to be romantic.
And after photographing weddings here, I can understand why couples fall in love with it once they're actually on the property. The combination of the panoramic views and the architecture is hard to beat.
It really does feel like a little castle tucked into the Tennessee mountains.
